Snowboard boot sizing comes down to three checks: your foot length, how the boot feels when you stand in it, and whether the boot suits your board's width. This guide covers measuring your foot, converting UK, US, EU and cm sizes across two brands' charts, the try-on test, and the boot-to-board width check.

From the shop floor

Measure your foot length in centimetres, then try boots on in the socks you ride in. Laced up and standing, your toes should barely touch the front of the liner, and your heel should stay down when you bend into your stance. Convert UK, US and EU sizes with the chart of the brand you are buying, since brand charts do not always agree.

How do I measure my foot for snowboard boots?

Measure your foot length in centimetres at home, standing, in the socks you ride in.

  1. Tape a sheet of paper to the floor against a wall.
  2. Stand on it with your heel touching the wall.
  3. Mark the tip of your longest toe.
  4. Measure from the wall to the mark. Do both feet and keep the longer number.

That length leads to your Mondopoint, a boot size written as a length in centimetres or millimetres. Nitro's boot size and fit guide adds an allowance to your foot length to get the boot's Mondopoint size:

  • Snug: add 5 mm for men's, 10 mm for women's. For narrow feet, or for the shortest boot to cut toe or heel drag.
  • Standard: add 10 mm for men's, 15 mm for women's. Rated as the right fit for 90% of feet.
  • Roomy: add 15 mm for men's, 20 mm for women's. For feet that get pressure points, thick socks or custom insoles.

A men's foot that measures 28 cm lands at 290 mm on the standard fit. Write your foot length down before you shop. A length in centimetres reads the same in any country, while US, UK and EU numbers change from chart to chart.

How does snowboard boot sizing convert between UK, US, EU and cm?

On both Burton's size chart and Nitro's boot chart, UK 10 is US men's 11, EU 44 and Mondopoint 29 cm (290 mm), and US men's 8 is Mondopoint 26 cm (260 mm).

So a UK 10 rider shopping US sizes starts at a men's 11, and a US men's 8 in centimetres is 26. The two charts write Mondopoint in different units, centimetres on one and millimetres on the other, but the length is the same.

How do I convert women's snowboard boot sizes to men's?

Use the chart for the exact brand, because the two charts in the table above disagree: one puts women's US a full size above men's US, the other half a size above.

A women's 8 works out to a men's 7 on one chart and a men's 7.5 on the other. If you're crossing between a women's and a men's model, convert through Mondopoint or your foot length in centimetres instead of the US number.

Should I size up or down from my shoe size for snowboard boots?

Neither: size from your measured foot length and the fit test, and treat your shoe size as a rough starting point.

Street shoes vary by brand and style, so the number on your sneakers may not match your snowboard boot size.

We'd rather you start at the size your foot length points to and move half a size at a time than jump a full size up for comfort. A boot that feels roomy in the shop has more space to fill once the liner packs out. That extra space shows up as heel lift and loose edge control.

How should snowboard boots fit when I try them on?

Laced up and standing, your toes should just brush the front of the liner, and your heel should stay planted when you bend into your stance.

  1. Put on the socks you ride in.
  2. Lace or tighten the boot as firmly as is comfortable.
  3. Stand up and walk around for several minutes. Sitting lets your foot slide back, which hides how much room is at the toe.
  4. Bend your knees and lean forward into a riding stance.
  5. Check your toes. Jammed against the front means try half a size up. No contact at all means try half a size down.
  6. Check your heel. If it lifts with the boot laced as tight as is comfortable, try half a size down. If the right length still lets your heel lift, try a different model.

If you don't own snowboard socks yet, pick up a pair before you try boots, such as the 686 Men's Fox Racing Socks Fox Yellow 2027, so the fit you test is the fit you ride. Trying a different model can mean trying a different brand, and our piece on Deeluxe snowboard boots looks at one boot maker we carry.

Are new snowboard boots too small if they hurt?

Not always: liners pack out as you ride, so a boot that feels snug on day one loosens as the liner shapes to your foot.

Heat molding the liner shapes it to your foot faster and gives a more custom fit.

Our read: even, all-over snugness is the liner still settling, while toes jammed into the front with the boot laced and you standing upright is a length problem. Pack-out compresses the liner foam around your foot, and the shell stays the same length. Numb toes or a sharp pressure point in one spot are worth a second try-on in another size or model before you ride.

Does my boot size change what board width I need?

Yes: bigger boots need a wider board, or your toe and heel can drag in the snow when you lay the board on edge.

Waist width is the board's narrowest point, between the bindings. The Good Ride's sizing guide matches non-tapered men's boards to boot size like this:

  • US men's 8 to 10: regular width, 25 to 26 cm waist.
  • US men's 10 to 12: mid-wide, 26 to 27 cm waist.
  • US men's 12 to 14: ultra-wide, 27 to 28 cm waist.

The same guide puts safe overhang, the amount of boot sticking past each edge, at about 1.5 to 2 cm per side.

Our read: a men's 10 sits right on the line between the regular and mid-wide rows, so that rider should check the actual board instead of trusting the list.

Strap your boots into the bindings at your stance angles, set the board on carpet, and measure how far toe and heel stick out past each edge. More forward angle on the bindings shortens that overhang. A reduced-footprint boot keeps the same inside size but is shorter on the outside, which also cuts drag. If you're still picking your first board, use the width list above alongside our beginner snowboard guide.

Does boot size matter for my bindings?

Yes: bindings come in sizes that each cover a range of boots, so check that your boot size falls inside the binding's size range before you buy.

For Step On, Burton says binding size must match boot size and men's and women's products must not be mixed, warning that a mismatch can cause a malfunction and compromise your safety.

Once the sizes match, our guide to setting up snowboard bindings covers the rest of the setup.

We fit boots and set up bindings for customers, including stance width and angles. Bring the board you ride when you come in for boots, so the fit and the binding setup happen on the gear you'll take to the hill.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mondopoint the same across brands?

Mondopoint measures the same thing everywhere, a length, but brands write it and convert it differently. The two charts in our table list the same UK 10 boot as 29 and as 290, which are one length in centimetres and millimetres. Shell shape and length also vary by model, so treat any chart as a starting point and confirm with the fit test.

Should my toes touch the end of the boot?

Yes, barely: with the boot laced and you standing, your toes should just brush the front of the liner. If they're jammed against it, try half a size up. If they don't touch at all, try half a size down.

How much should my heel lift inside the boot?

Your heel should stay down when you bend into your stance with the boot laced as tight as is comfortable. If it lifts, try half a size smaller. If the correct length still lifts, try a different model.

What socks should I wear to try on snowboard boots?

Wear one pair of the socks you ride in. A thicker sock than you ride in makes the boot feel tighter than it will on the hill, and a thinner one makes it feel looser.

Which snowboard boot size should I try on first?

Start at the size your foot length points to on the chart of the brand you're buying, then try half a size on either side.

We'd rather you pick the pair that passes the toe and heel test after several minutes standing than the pair that felt nicest the moment you sat down. If you're a US men's 10 or bigger, check that boot against your board's waist width before you ride.

Measure your foot in centimetres before you shop, bring the socks you ride in, and try boots on in store before the first snow day. Start with this season's Deeluxe boots in your measured size, then let the toe and heel test pick the pair.
